What are IOP and PHP, and How Can They Help You?

Who Needs PHP?

  • You're experiencing suicidal thoughts or self-harm urges and need close monitoring and support
  • You just left the hospital and need intensive step-down care to stay stable
  • Your depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, or psychosis is severe enough that you can't work or go to school right now
  • You've tried IOP and need something stronger
  • You're in acute crisis but hospitalization feels wrong for your situation
  • You need structure, safety, and professional oversight—all day, every day

What a Typical Day Looks Like

6–8 hours daily. 5–6 days per week.

  • Morning Group Therapy – Process what's happening, get support, learn from others
  • Individual Therapy – Deep work with your therapist on the specific issues driving your crisis
  • Psychiatry & Medication Management – Daily or near-daily psychiatric check-ins. Close med monitoring.
  • Skills & Psychoeducation – Crisis management, emotion regulation, problem-solving, relapse prevention
  • Specialized Groups – Depending on your needs: trauma processing, substance use recovery, family systems, life skills
  • Lunch & Community – Peer connection is healing. You're not alone.

PHP vs. Inpatient vs. IOP: Which is Right?

Inpatient (Hospital): 24 hrs/day, locked unit, when you're actively suicidal or psychotic and can't be safe at home.

PHP (Our Program): 6–8 hrs/day in our office. You go home at night. You're in crisis but can be safe at home with family support. Most people jump from hospital → PHP → IOP → outpatient.

IOP: 9–20 hrs/week. You're stable enough to work or go to school most days.

What PHP Actually Does

You Get Stable Fast

Daily psychiatric oversight, medication management, and intensive therapy mean you stabilize in days, not weeks.

You Learn Crisis Skills in Real-Time

You're in groups with people in similar crises. You learn from them. You practice skills when they matter most.

Your Psychiatry is Serious

Not a med check every quarter. Daily assessment, close monitoring, tweaks as you respond. Real clinical care.

You Sleep at Home

You get the benefits of intensive inpatient care but maintain your life at night. Family time. Your bed. Your dog. That matters.

I don't think I will ever be able to adequately articulate what Mind Above Matter (Burleson - Virtual) did for me in a time where I needed something so desperately. At the time, I didn't know what I needed, or how anything could help, but thank the Lord I was directed to MAB. The program literally saved my life and set me back up for success. I 100% feel like I've been able to take back my life with the help from the therapists, psychiatrist, and program that I was apart of in my time at MAB. If you are thinking about starting this program, or referring someone you love to this program, don't hesitate - do it. I promise, you will not regret it.

We had the absolute best experience working with Ally. She was my child’s therapist and made such a positive impact on her life, not just in her progress, but in her confidence and overall happiness. From the very beginning, Ally made our entire family feel included in the process. She took the time to explain everything clearly, welcomed our questions, and always made us feel heard.
Her kindness, patience, and genuine care for her clients truly set her apart. It’s clear she’s passionate about what she does and deeply invested in helping each child succeed. We are so grateful for her support and would recommend her to anyone looking for a compassionate and skilled therapist.

Graduating from the PHP and IOP program at Mind Over Matter has been a life-changing experience for me. From the very beginning, I felt truly supported and cared for. The therapists here are absolutely incredible — compassionate, skilled, and genuinely invested in helping you grow and heal.

Each session felt meaningful and safe, and the team created an environment where I could open up, work through challenges, and actually see progress. What stood out the most was how much the therapists went above and beyond — they didn’t just “do their job,” they made me feel seen, heard, and understood in a way that’s rare to find.

If you’re looking for a program that provides structure, encouragement, and outstanding therapists who truly care, I can’t recommend Mind Over Matter enough. This place gave me the tools and confidence I needed to move forward, and I’ll always be grateful for my time here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is PHP the same as inpatient?
No. Inpatient is 24 hrs in a hospital. PHP is intensive daily treatment (6–8 hrs) but you go home at night. PHP is designed for people in crisis who can be safe at home with family support.
How long will I be in PHP?
Typically 2–4 weeks. Some people need longer. We reassess every few days. Once you're stable, we step you down to IOP and eventually outpatient therapy.
What if I need to be in the hospital?
We'll tell you honestly. If you're not safe at home, we'll help you get admitted to inpatient care. After hospitalization, PHP is where most people go next.
Will I see the same psychiatrist every day?
You'll have a primary psychiatrist, but our team works together. You'll have oversight from the same doctors, not different ones each time.
Can I do PHP if I'm working?
Probably not during our standard hours. PHP requires significant time commitment. Most people take a leave of absence or go on short-term disability during PHP.
What happens after PHP?
Once you're stable, we transition you to IOP (9–20 hrs/week). Then to weekly outpatient therapy and psychiatry. We make sure the step-down is gradual and safe.
