What are IOP and PHP, and How Can They Help You?

What is Dual Diagnosis?

Dual diagnosis means you're dealing with a mental health disorder AND substance use (or addiction) at the same time.

Common combinations:

  • Depression + alcohol dependence
  • Anxiety + marijuana daily use
  • Bipolar disorder + stimulant abuse
  • PTSD + opioid use
  • ADHD + cocaine / methamphetamine
  • Borderline personality traits + substance use as self-injury

The substance use isn't just a bad habit. It's self-medication. Your brain has a mental health condition, and the substance temporarily relieves symptoms. So you keep using. It makes the underlying condition worse. You use more. Cycle deepens.

Breaking this requires treating both at the same time.

Why You Need Integrated Treatment, Not Bouncing Between Programs

  • One team. Not calling three different providers who don't know each other. One psychiatrist. One addiction counselor. One therapist. They talk. They coordinate.
  • One story. You don't re-explain your trauma, your drinking, your depression to person after person. We know your whole picture.
  • Treating the root. Addiction counseling without addressing depression? You'll relapse. Antidepressants without addressing substance use? You'll keep self-medicating. We address both.
  • Medication done right. Some meds don't mix with addiction. Some increase cravings. We know. We manage carefully.
  • Accountability & community. Groups with people dealing with both issues. They get it. Support means more when someone understands your exact situation.

What Treatment Looks Like

  • Intensive Therapy – Individual sessions addressing the trauma, depression, anxiety, or other conditions driving substance use
  • Addiction-Focused Groups – Processing cravings, relapse triggers, building recovery skills, peer support from people in dual diagnosis
  • Psychiatric Care – Evaluation, medication management, monitoring. We choose meds carefully for people in recovery.
  • Motivational Work – Not judgment. Meeting you where you are. Building intrinsic motivation to change.
  • Family Sessions – Healing damaged relationships. Teaching family how to support without enabling.
  • Life Skills & Coping – New ways to manage stress, emotion, boredom, social situations—without substances

What Actually Changes in Dual Diagnosis Treatment

You Understand Why You Use

Not judgment. Real understanding. What feeling or situation leads you to substances? What's underneath? You get it. Then you address it differently.

Mental Health Gets Treated

Your depression, anxiety, trauma—actually treated. Not just masked by substances. You feel better without needing to use.

You Have Real Alternatives

When cravings hit, you have skills. Grounding. Breathing. Movement. Connection. Things that actually work.

Relationships Heal

Family therapy helps repair trust. They learn how to support you without enabling. You rebuild relationships. That's powerful motivation for recovery.

I don't think I will ever be able to adequately articulate what Mind Above Matter (Burleson - Virtual) did for me in a time where I needed something so desperately. At the time, I didn't know what I needed, or how anything could help, but thank the Lord I was directed to MAB. The program literally saved my life and set me back up for success. I 100% feel like I've been able to take back my life with the help from the therapists, psychiatrist, and program that I was apart of in my time at MAB. If you are thinking about starting this program, or referring someone you love to this program, don't hesitate - do it. I promise, you will not regret it.

We had the absolute best experience working with Ally. She was my child’s therapist and made such a positive impact on her life, not just in her progress, but in her confidence and overall happiness. From the very beginning, Ally made our entire family feel included in the process. She took the time to explain everything clearly, welcomed our questions, and always made us feel heard.
Her kindness, patience, and genuine care for her clients truly set her apart. It’s clear she’s passionate about what she does and deeply invested in helping each child succeed. We are so grateful for her support and would recommend her to anyone looking for a compassionate and skilled therapist.

Graduating from the PHP and IOP program at Mind Over Matter has been a life-changing experience for me. From the very beginning, I felt truly supported and cared for. The therapists here are absolutely incredible — compassionate, skilled, and genuinely invested in helping you grow and heal.

Each session felt meaningful and safe, and the team created an environment where I could open up, work through challenges, and actually see progress. What stood out the most was how much the therapists went above and beyond — they didn’t just “do their job,” they made me feel seen, heard, and understood in a way that’s rare to find.

If you’re looking for a program that provides structure, encouragement, and outstanding therapists who truly care, I can’t recommend Mind Over Matter enough. This place gave me the tools and confidence I needed to move forward, and I’ll always be grateful for my time here.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to detox first, or can I start IOP/PHP with active use?
Depends on the substance and level of use. We evaluate. Some people can detox in IOP. Some need medical detox first (inpatient). Some need residential treatment before stepping down to IOP. We recommend based on your safety.
What about medication-assisted treatment (MAT)?
We offer MAT options for opioid and alcohol use disorder when clinically appropriate. Medication like buprenorphine or naltrexone + therapy + counseling. It works. Combined with treatment of underlying mental health, success rates are high.
Will I have to do AA/NA?
We recommend mutual support (AA, NA, SMART, etc.). We support that. But it's not mandatory. We integrate peer recovery with clinical treatment.
What if I relapse during treatment?
Relapse is part of recovery for many people. We don't kick you out. We look at what triggered it, adjust your plan, and keep going. Transparency is important—tell us what happened.
How long is dual diagnosis treatment?
IOP typically 6–12 weeks. PHP maybe 2–4 weeks before stepping to IOP. Some people need residential treatment first. We recommend based on severity and complexity.
Do you accept insurance for dual diagnosis?
Yes. Medicaid and all major commercial insurance. Dual diagnosis and substance use treatment are covered services. We verify benefits.
